Statement

In this sculptural series I strive to express the complexity of familiar connections. For my family, the dinner table was a place for communication. We talked about our days, we celebrated, we fought. In my work I cover and distort dishware using a mix of medias including fabric, cement, and wax. I express what it feels like when family communication becomes dysfunctional. Small, mundane moments become colossal and debilitating with time and examination. I am interested in the ways that family skeletons are often unspoken and generational traumas exhibit themselves.  Using domestic materials, I contemplate how moments of joy can remain joyful, even if those same memories also hold pain. Likewise, the people who love you the most can harm you in the most lasting ways.
