First Year Student, Fiber or Interdisciplinary Sculpture Major

Reveal and Reclaim

Cristy Rodriguez is a Miami-based, first-year fiber artist. Her work currently focuses on the context of hair; with the use of wearable soft sculpture, she creates identity-based narratives, stemming from the history and cultural traditions of hair.

Reveal and Reclaim, introduces snippets of biographies and historical traditions pertaining to the hair of women of color. These wearables explore the need for cultural awareness and liberation on a global scale. They not only reveal the shied-away knowledge of hair history and baggage, but also reclaim, or rather, re-appropriate ceremonies that may stem from degrading or derogatory correlations with hair and hair texture.
