December 6 Campus Memo

Details around building hours over winter break.

During the upcoming winter academic break, please be aware that the MICA campus will be closed during official College holidays from Friday, December 24, 2021 through Saturday, January 1, 2022. As a reminder, there will also be changes on campus regarding hours and services throughout winter break. Students are encouraged to check with specific departments, services, and studios to determine when facilities will be available (all campus phone numbers are available online in the MICA directory). In addition, please note the following adjustments to building access hours:

Academic Services:

Friday, December 17

Most buildings will close at 11 p.m.  Buildings that normally have extended hours will close at 7 a.m. Saturday, December 18 (see the Extended Building Access Hours email from November 1 for a list of these buildings).  See Residence Halls below for their closing hours.
Saturday-Sunday, December 18-19 Academic buildings will be closed for the weekend, except for the Fred Lazarus IV Center, which will be open to graduate students onlyGraduate students will have access to graduate studios and collaborative spaces within Lazarus (ID required) from 8 a.m – 11 p.m.
Monday, December 20 through January 16, 2022: Academic building core hours will be Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. with the exception of the College holidays listed above.
Saturday-Sunday, December 25-26
Saturday-Sunday, January 1-2
Saturday-Sunday, January 8-9
Saturday-Sunday, January 15-16
All Academic buildings will be closed on weekends. ***

***Graduate students will have access to the Fred Lazarus IV Center and other graduate studios and collaborative workspaces (ID required) from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., seven days a week (with the exception of the College holidays listed above). Fred Lazarus IV Center will resume 24-hour access during the MFAST Winter Session on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 through Monday, January 17, 2022. Buildings will resume normal hours of operation even though it is a College holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day).

Film Centre

Core hours for the Film Centre will be 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. from Thursday, December 23 through Monday, January 17, 2022. However, please be aware of the following exceptions:

The Film Centre The Film Centre will be closed Friday through Monday, December 24-27, Friday through Sunday, December 31-January 2, and Monday, January 17 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day)
The Cage  The Cage will be closed Thursday, December 23 through Sunday, January 2.  From January 3 through January 17, Cage hours will be Tuesdays-Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuesday, January 18, 2022 Regular hours will resume.


Campus Services:

Residence Halls

Residence halls will close on Saturday, December 18 at noon. Late departures will result in additional charges. Only students who applied for and have been approved to live in the residence halls over winter break will be permitted to remain after that time. All other students may return to residence halls beginning on Friday, January 14, 2022 after noon.

Miscellaneous Academic and Campus Services

Some academic and campus services will have hours that differ from core building hours, such as Exhibitions, the MICA Store, Postal & Print Services, Fitness Center, the Grad Lab, Fabrication Shops, and the Student Health Center.  Please check the MICA webpage or call those services directly to establish their hours of operation.

Decker Library will accept book returns on Saturday-Sunday, December 18-19 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.  Access to the rest of Bunting Center is unavailable during that weekend.   The library will be closed from December 20 through January 2, 2022.  It will reopen Monday-Friday, January 3 through January 14 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.  Regular hours will begin with the start of the spring semester.  

Shuttle Services

Campus shuttle services will end for the winter break on Saturday morning, December 18 at 7 a.m. Please note the following information:

  • Limited shuttle services will resume on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 with the Evening Safety Shuttle running from 5 p.m. - midnight in conjunction with the MFAST Winter Session.

  • Regular, full Evening Safety Shuttle and Circulator Shuttle services will resume Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

  • The Canton Crossing Shopping Shuttle will not run over the winter break.

Two shuttles will be available to take MICA students to BWI Airport.  These shuttles, which are free and available on a first-come/first-served basis, will leave Founders Green at the following dates and times:

  • Wednesday, December 15: 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.

  •  Thursday, December 16:  8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.

  • Friday, December 17:  8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.

  •  Saturday, December 18: 10 a.m. and noon (LAST available shuttle)

Food Service

Please note the following changes regarding food services:

Glace Grill Glace Grill will close at midnight on Thursday, December 16. It will resume normal hours of operation on Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 5 p.m.
 Java Corner  Java Corner will close on Friday, December 17 at its usual time of 4:30 p.m. It will reopen with normal hours of operation on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Meyerhoff Dining Room Meyerhoff Dining Room will serve brunch on Saturday, December 18 from 10 a.m. – noon, and will then close for the break. It will reopen with lunch at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
Cafe Doris Cafe Doris will be open Monday-Thursday, December 20-23 from 9 a.m. -1 p.m. It will be closed from Friday, December 24 through Sunday, January 2, 2022.  It will reopen on Monday, January 3, 2022 with limited hours of 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. Normal hours of operation will return on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

Please note that the heat in tents will be turned off on Friday, December 17 for Cohen Plaza and Friday, December 24 for Lazarus Center.
