Statement
To BE AT EASE means to be relaxed and happy, and is also the name of My Thesis. This is based on my intercultural experiences as a Ghanaian-American. When I was in Ghana, I witnessed many of my friends and family members looking for things to be grateful for when stress, grief, and life challenges came unexpectedly. This inspired me to design various patterns with people dancing and having a good time. In essence, they are “shaking off” their negativity. I then use Graphic Design such as posters, and lookbooks to contextualize and explain the cultural contexts of my work. When people wear my patterns I want them to be reminded of the importance of having a positive mindset and to try to BE AT EASE, the very name of this collection. Furthermore, I seek to contribute my voice through design to foster a community that inspires all people of African, and non-African backgrounds to be stylish and appreciate various Black cultures.
