Sara Egorin-Hooper

Sara Egorin-Hooper provided services for students with special needs in Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) for 44 years and she has been teaching the Introduction to Special Education course at MICA since spring 2007.

It has been Sara’s life's work to focus on the many strengths, gifts and capabilities that all people possess. Sara feels that we are ALL students and teachers to each other.  It is her fundamental belief that each person needs to be recognized as an important, valued, accepted, and contributing member of the school community and the community at large. Additionally, she believes that every person is innately creative which has inspired her to coordinate the annual Very Special Arts Festival for BCPS.

Sara was the Supervisor of Teaching and Learning in the Department of Special Education for BCPS where she supervised district-wide programs for students ages 3 through 21 with a range of disabilities, including autism, intellectual disabilities, and other neurodiversities. In this position, Sara was integral in the development of five post-secondary programs for students with significant cognitive disabilities. These programs were located on local college campuses and Sara served as the administrator for each site. Prior to working as Supervisor, Sara held numerous positions in BCPS including Special Education Specialist, Professional Development Inclusion Facilitator, Itinerant Special Education Teacher, Special Education Teacher, and Home and Hospital Teacher. Sara has also served as an Adjunct Instructor at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), School of Education, Department of Special Education where she was the liaison for the Supports for Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Grant. This grant was a collaborative venture between JHU and BCPS. She has also been an Adjunct Instructor at Goucher College and Towson University. Sara is currently the Project Coordinator of the Reimagining Professional Learning/Opportunity Grant at the IDEALS Institute. 

Sara has vast experience working with paraprofessionals as well as with families of students with disabilities. Sara is a proud possibilitarian, working everyday to help build “Possibilitopia.”  She is a published author, licensed massage therapist and trained volunteer for hospice. 

 

Sara holds a B.S. in Special Education and General Education from the University of Maryland, and three master’s degrees from JHU in Reading, Communication Disorders, and Severe and Profound Disabilities. She holds Advanced Professional Certificates in Special Education Administration and Supervision, Elementary Administration and Supervision, Special Education (K – 12), and Elementary Education (K-6).
