Baltimore Racial Justice Fund

Black Lives Matter.

Racism against Black people has lasted for far too long. MICA decries the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, and so many other Black men and women—beloved mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, friends and colleagues—going back to the founding of this country.

Yet as a predominately white institution with a discriminatory history of its own, MICA can never truly feel the oppression, inequity, and brutality sowed by hundreds of years of systemic racism in our country. In facing that, we have learned that we must do more than stand in support. We must listen, and we must act.

There is no one thing MICA can do to help right the structural wrongs or racism in our community and in our country.  It will take more than one effort or initiative, forum or fundraiser to achieve those aspirations. The Baltimore Racial Justice Fund (BRJF) is just one step in a very long journey.

As part of the fund MICA will match contributions made by our faculty, staff, and students to the specified nonprofit charity of their choice— up to $15,000 total.  The BRJF has been structured this way to empower the community to choose, themselves, which anti-Black racism charities will  receive support from the fund.  Matching funds will be provided promptly on a first-come-first-matched basis.

Eligibility

Employees & Students 
Faculty, staff, and students who are employed by/enrolled at MICA as of June 1, 2020 are eligible to participate. Each participating employee/student may request one match, per person, with a minimum contribution of $25 and a maximum of  $1000.  MICA will donate to the same organization as the donor’s direct gift, equaling a 1:1 match, if it meets MICA's matching fund requirements.

 

Eligible organizations must have a mission focused on the pursuit of racial justice and serving underserved populations within the Baltimore City community; be recognized by the IRS under Section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code, or have a qualifying nonprofit fiscal sponsor; and be located in the state of Maryland.

Private foundations, charitable gift funds, United Way, family funds, or those where funds are re-granted to other organizations (such as community foundations) are not eligible for matching funds. Government agencies and political organizations are also not eligible.

In addition, dues for membership or similar affiliation group, and subscription fees for publications are not eligible.

Religious and spiritual 501(c)(3) charities are eligible only if they provide services to the community at-large on a nondiscriminatory basis regardless of faith and without promotion of a particular faith, creed or doctrine. 

To qualify for a MICA match, you must submit proof of your charitable contribution, including the name/contact information of the charity organization; the gift amount and date (qualifying contributions will be accepted from May 26, 2020 onward); and proof of gift to charity (confirmation letter/email/receipt).

NOTE: Financial contributions must be personal, tax-deductible donations that have been paid and not simply pledged.

Matching requests must be submitted by July 31, 2020. Once verified, MICA contributions will be made directly to the qualifying charity of your choice, and MICA will send you a confirmation receipt.
