What is it?
This is an 8-week (40 hours) course that prepares MICA faculty to teach more effectively to English language learners. ELL specialists introduce the fundamentals of second language acquisition, their implications for instruction, and the perspectives of students and faculty members. The course culminates in a final project, where the faculty can apply their new understanding gained to one aspect of their teaching practice.
Who is it for?
All full-time and part-time faculty
How does it work?
The course is delivered as a series of weekly modules, assigned readings (textbook provided), presentations, and activities that are completed asynchronously. There are also scheduled opportunities for synchronous engagement with the workshop host and the participants. It is expected that participants spend five hours per week on coursework. Detailed information about the course can be found in the syllabus. After successfully completing the course, participants will receive a $500 stipend and a certificate of completion from MICA’s Center for Teaching Innovation & Exchange.
