MFAST Summer Session 2022

We look forward to continuing to support you and the program during the 2022 summer term. For your planning purposes, we have gathered some key dates, campus department information, and preparatory information below.

General Information

Important Dates:

  • Classes will be held June 13–July 22, 2022. 

  • Studio Move-In is June 10–June 12, 2022. 

  • Studio Move-Out is July 23–July 24, 2022.

Operational Mode 5 

As outlined in Recap 23, MICA’s physical campus transitioned to modified Operational Mode 5 (OM5) effective Monday, May 23. 

  • MICA's Campus is open to MICA students, staff, faculty, and members of the  public. 
  • Indoor masking is optional in all indoor teaching spaces.  MICA remains a mask supportive and mask-friendly environment.  Anyone who wishes to wear a mask should feel comfortable doing so and will be fully supported by the College in their choice. 
  • Physical exhibitions within MICA’s defined gallery spaces will be open to the MICA community as well as the general public. Masking is not required but requested of all non-MICA visitors.

On-Campus Housing

For those of you who plan to stay in MICA housing this summer, please complete this housing survey to register. You will be asked to provide basic information about yourself and preferences with regard to noise levels, working hours, etc.—details which will assist with placement in the residence halls. Surveys must be completed by May 26, 2022 to ensure a reservation.

The MICA Portal & 2-Factor Authentication

MyMICA is where students, faculty, and staff can access services and resources that provide self-service for things like student registration, grade reports, class rosters, and other information. 

Refund Checks

Expecting a refund check from your student loan?

Your student bill was emailed to your mica.edu email account. To request a refund check: Email your name and student ID number to studentaccounts@mica.edu, requesting a refund.  It's as simple as that!

Parking Permits

Want to park on campus? Register for your student parking permit here. Select “Summer” for permit type, and continue through the registration pages. You may pick up your parking permit at Campus Safety at the same time you pick up your MICARD.

Art Tech Center 

The Art Tech Center houses a number of technology resources for the MICA campus. Originally a union headquarters, the College purchased and renovated the building in the 1980's to become MICA's first cafeteria. Today the Art Tech Center is home to the following resources: Note: Graduate students should first plan to source and check equipment out from the Graduate Lab on the 5th Floor of Lazarus Center, the inventory of which was developed specifically for graduate populations. Decker Library

Decker Library provides a wide range of services and facilities for research and instruction.

 Research Consultations: You can schedule a research consultation with Kathy during her available times, even when the library is closed. Available in-person and online.

Book delivery service to Lazarus Center: You may put books on hold to be delivered to the Center for Art Education Hurwitz Library daily each afternoon. Holds are run at 9 am, 11:30 am, and 2:30 pm. If you submit a hold request after 11:30 am, it will be delivered to Hurwitz the next business day.  You can submit requests here.

Returning books: Returns for these books can be done via after-hours drop at Decker Library or sent back via interoffice mail.

Exhibitions Department

The Department of Exhibitions contributes to MICA's exposure and involvement in the visual arts within Baltimore as well as the greater region. MICA student body, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and visitors have over 150 exhibitions per year on view.

Graduate Research Lab 

The Graduate Research Lab (Grad Lab) is a resource for MICA graduate students interested in using technology for art making. The Grad Lab has computer workstations, an Electronics Project Room, a Print Lab, a Sound Studio,Video Editing Suites and an equipment checkout with a wide variety of video, audio, multimedia, and still camera equipment for checkout. The lab is staffed by a rotating group of Graduate Student Technical Assistants (Techs) and is headed by the Graduate Research Lab Coordinator. Students can use the Grad Lab's resources to conduct their own research in technology through using the Lab's resources, attending workshops, making appointments for one-on-one tutorials, and through an online database of articles called "the research database" that contains information on various technologies and their use in art.

ACCESS

The Grad Lab, Equipment Checkout, Computer Lab and Print Lab resources are available for students enrolled in a graduate program at MICA. An active MICA Graduate ID card is required to enter the Grad Lab, to check out equipment or to use computer and printing resources. All MFAST students are expected to attend Grad Lab Orientation on June 10. You must attend this session to be eligible to use the resources provided by Grad Lab.

RESERVING & CHECKING OUT EQUIPMENT

All students must complete and sign a Terms and Conditions form before checking out equipment. Return the completed form to phunt@mica.edu.

Reservations must be made online at least 24 hours in advance of pickup date.

PRINTING

Students must make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance of coming to print. Visit the Grad Lab Printing page for complete information about access, services, and pricing.

MICA Evening Shuttle 

The Evening Safety Shuttle operates daily during the summer (June 10–August 6) from 5 pm–12 midnight with the exception of July 4. This is an on-call service and transportation can be requested by calling 410-462-7575 or 410-225-2245. Any campus desk attendant can request a shuttle as well.

MICA Health & Wellness Center 

MICA Health and Wellness  is home to the Fitness Center, Health Promotion Education, Student Counseling, Student Health, Student Development, and Accessibility and Disability Services.  All Services, with the exception of Student Development and Accessibility and Disability are located at 1501 West Mt. Royal Ave; Student Development and Accessibility and Disability Services are housed in Bunting.

Health and Wellness is led by the Associate Vice President for Student Health and Wellness, whose role is to coordinate campus health education programming and support intentional collaboration with departments that address the physical, psychological, emotional, social, and developmental needs of MICA students.

From your head to your toes and everything in between, MICA Student Health Services is here to care for you. MICA Student Health Services by Chase Brexton is open to all students, whether you live on-campus or off.

Student Counseling Center 

The Student Counseling Center helps students make positive adjustment to college life so that they can have the best possible learning and growing experiences during their years at MICA. They offer short-term individual therapy to students enrolled in summer classes and those completing MICA-sponsored internships. Timely Care is free and available to all students, TimelyCare.

Access to these departmental facilities are by arrangement and based on individual proposals. Interested students should prepare a brief proposal that includes: name, program, year, email, cell phone number, a detailed description of the proposed project including number and scale of pieces proposed, their skill level with the relevant studio and its processes, tools and equipment. Email this proposal to your Director. Proposals are reviewed by the Director and then forwarded to the relevant Dept. Chair and Studio Manager for final approval. All students whose proposals are accepted are required to come to a scheduled orientation meeting with the Studio Manager. Students receive an overview of the studio and its facilities, as well as receive any necessary EHS training. Additional materials fees may be charged based upon the scale and the specific materials needed for the work proposed.
