MICA's Painting Department is ranked as one of the best in the country, providing our majors with many opportunities and greater visibility for their achievements.

Painting at MICA is distinguished by both tradition and rebellion. The program celebrates the development of strong painting and drawing skills, an exploration of old and new forms (representational and abstract, 2D, and 3D), and an appreciation of independent, personal expression and risk-taking.  Painting majors are consistently accepted into the country's top ten fine arts graduate programs, including those at MICA, Yale, Columbia, ISD, and the Cranbrook Academy.

McMillan/Stewart Endowed Chairs in Painting

MICA is pleased to announce that the 2023-24 McMillan/Stewart Endowed Chairs in Painting are Hedieh Ilchi and Nanette Carter.

Given in memory of former faculty Reba Stewart, the endowment was created to bring indiviuals with a diversity of thought and experience to MICA's Painting Department.

Independent Studio Space

Painting majors benefit from the facilities at MICA’s Fred Lazarus IV Studio Center, a historic industrial building just a short walk from the central campus. Located in Baltimore’s Station North Arts & Entertainment District, it includes independent studio space for upper-division students in drawing, painting, and GFA. The facility also allows you to rub elbows with MICA’s graduate students and be a part of a strong community of graduate and undergraduate fine artists.
