February's Art@Lunch speaker is Kerry Roeder, from the History of Art, Design & Visual Culture department. The 1913 Armory Show was a transformative event when American audiences were first exposed to European avant-garde art. In response, critics and cartoonists flooded newspapers with parodies of the art on display. While these comics often expressed a surface disdain for modern art, their experimental form belied their professed skepticism. In this talk she will examine the role print comics played in slyly acclimating mass audiences to modernism in the early decades of the twentieth century.
