Statement

In the United States, there has traditionally been two categories of citizens, the American and the Hyphenated American. If we go by what we see in black and white, everyone who is nationalized or born citizenship should be considered and treated as an American. Yet, through our everyday lives, that is not entirely true. The label of “American” is reserved for those with white skin, or those associated with "patriotism". While on the other hand, people of color are relegated to a subcategory of that, the hyphenated citizens. Asian-American, Black-American, Indian-American, Latin-American, and even Native-American.

 

This project, aims to challenge the current social definition of who is an “American” by placing people of color in roles that have been conventionally held by white characters. I do this by bringing in traditional American icons,
