Statement

I have always had a fascination with film and media since childhood. During this time, I developed an obsession with Steven Spielberg films and with watching music videos; thus falling in love with the concept of telling stories with images and sound. Fast forward to my early adulthood, I began studying Audio Engineering and Film Studies such as: Experimental Film, Aesthetics, and Film Theory. This then gave me an outlet and context to create my own work.

My work focuses on reflecting on personal experiences, internet pop culture, and female heterosexuality. I like to use film as a way to express these notions in order to connect with others, to start conversations about taboo topics, and to experience others reactions through sharing my work.

My work is mainly inspired by Experimental Filmmakers such as: Stan Breakage, Maya Deren, Kenneth Anger, and Luis Buñel for their style of editing and surrealist imagery that inspired my works Magnetism and Betsy’s Best Day, and also Eleanor Antin and Sadie Benning for their raw video essay style that inspired my work Skin Deep. Recently, I’ve also been inspired by Guy Maddin’s and Harmony Korine’s unconventional storytelling style. They have been huge inspirations for my thesis film, Love Yourself.

My creative process always comes to me spontaneously while reminiscing on a recent event in my life, and/or by listening to a song that then prompts an image in my mind that I set out to recreate in a pop cultured, collagist aesthetic. This is why I like to work in Adobe Creative Cloud’s applications: Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro because of their ability to Dynamic Link, giving me to ability to combine different medias such as video, stills, and drawings in order to create my collagist aesthetic. I also like shooting vertically on my iPhone to experiment with how I can utilize the blank space that the aspect ratio creates. It is also great for posting my work online, and to also get certain reactions from people.
