Statement
frequent goodbyes presents artworks that bring attention to people coming from multiple cultural backgrounds who aren’t easily classified together as a group. Sometimes referred to as third culture kids—a term first coined by sociologist Dr. Ruth Hill Useem in the 1950s—these people have spent a significant part of their childhood living outside of their passport countries, and on either side of their parents’ cultures. “Where are you from?” is a forever-dreaded question for those who live this lifestyle, whether as expats, diplomats, or nomads. Frequent Goodbyes opens a conversation about the complexity of culture and allows us to imagine how future citizens will bridge differences and blur national boundaries.
