Urbanization rates in the United States have been on the rise steadily for over 100 years, with a 39.3% rate in 1900 jumping to a 80.8% rate in 2010. Projections estimate a nearly 90% rate of urbanization in the United States by the year 2050. However, only a handful of domestic cities are poised to meet the growing demands of people desiring an urban lifestyle by offering the amenities required for living, working and playing in a convenient, safe, and dense setting. Cities do have a choice in positioning themselves as desirable to a growing number of people with an increasing freedom of mobility; many of these choices can be heavily influenced by urban design principles and practices.
